Although she is about to be outshone by the new super-battlecruisers of the Renown class, HMS Tiger remains one of the strongest assets to our battlecruiser fleet. During the construction of the ships of the Lion class, the Imperial Japanese Navy ordered a new battlecruiser design that was recognized to be even stronger, and so British engineers redesigned the fourth ship of the Lion class to surpass the specifications of the IJNS Kongo. The result is an excellent ship which combines high speed, heavy armament and a much stronger protection than her half-sisters of the Lion class. Originally, a second ship was planned, but the construction of HMS Leopard was cancelled in favour of a sixth ship of the Queen Elizabeth class. Unfortunately, the construction of this ship, to be named HMS Agincourt, had to be abandoned due to the outbreak of the war. HMS Tiger was commissioned in October 1914.
